about

Flock of Satellites is an album that pays tribute to many of the great milestones in technological advancements while itself being a milestone for Matrix Mirage. From its musical depictions of the ethereal sounds of Satellites soaring through the edges of space to the deep churning sounds of hydroelectric power plants like the one found at Fontana Dam; the album Flock of Satellites paints a vibrant picture of the milestones of modern innovation. On Sonic Boom you can almost hear supersonic jets breaking the sound barrier and Tower Lights envisions the red lights of transmission towers pulsating dreamily on the horizon.
For Jeremy and Lon the album itself was a milestone in technological innovations as well as an important point in their musical journey. Both Lon and Jeremy had recently acquired Yamaha QY 20 sequencers and had been busy creating musical compositions. Also about that time they had come into possession of an automated digital mixing board and a mini disc recorder. While still lacking the huge benefit of multitrack recording, the duo had launched well into the lower atmosphere of modern digital music composition and recording. One of the beauties of this album according to Lon is that it incorporates both precision sequencer note generation and live on the fly guitar and synth improvisation. In other words Jeremy and Lon would create songs on the QY 20 and then they would play together along with the sequencer as the mini disc recorder was rolling. This allowed spontaneity, interaction, and that ever allusive musical aspiration of synergistic creativity. The album is also an interesting paradox of opposites such as digital and analog, electric and acoustic, keyboard and guitar, program and improvisation, pop and psychedelic. Lon muses, “Looking back on the instruments and life circumstances that came together at one moment in time to make this album possible is much like contemplating on a larger scale the interaction of technological advances and individual lives that have created the modern culture in which we live.”
